History of Penarth Cricket Club
It is difficult to ascertain the exact birth date of Penarth Cricket Club. Some knowledgeable people in the world of cricket state that Penarth C.C. played in the Cowbridge / Bridgend locality in 1847/1850, but it is safe to assume that 1850/1851 is a calculated choice. Since 1924, cricket has been played at the same venue at Penarth Athletic field where it shares its home with Penarth Rugby Club, mens and ladies hockey clubs and more recently, Penarth Lacrosse Club.
Penarth C.C. during its history has enjoyed prominence in its recreational activities. In the 1850's 'friendly' matches were played against teams as far apart as Bridgend and Abergavenny. Even up until 1926, Penarth C.C. rejected invitations to join a South Wales and Monmouthshire league.Subsequent to the second world war, 'friendly' matches continued. The first XI fixture list included Abergavenny, Chepstow, Panteg and Usk.
In 1968 the Welsh Clubs Cricket Conference commenced and a host of new clubs noow appeared on a league fixture list. Over the next few years, discussions between clubs and leagues continued on the merits of the leagues, promotion and relegation. But uppermost in all crickters minds must be the need to improve cricketing standards, whilst maintaining sportsmanship at all times.
Penarth C.C. has always been at the forefront of endeavouring to introduce youngsters into the game of cricket. Currently we provide this type of cricket for under 11's, 13's and 15's. Long may it continue.
Now in the 21st Century, Penarth C.C. are apart of a new dynamic and competitive league, comprising the best clubs in South East Wales. Teams that have for a long time been known further afield. Cardif, St. Fagans, Newport and more recently, the national village and Welsh cup winners, Sully. May the best of of the area's cricketers compete with and against each other in the true spirit of the game.
