History of Penarth CC
It is difficult to ascertain the exact birth date of the Penarth Cricket Club, but it is safe to assume that 1850/1851 is a calculated choice.
Where did Penarth play their cricket? A report in a local newspaper dated 1864 stated that matches took place on Llandough Moors but when the tide was high it took possession of the ground. Between 1880 - 1892 cricket was played on the ground where All Saints Church is now sited. This ground was requisitioned and in 1892 Penarth Cricket and Penarth RFC moved to an area behind the Masonic Hall. They stayed here until 1924. The present ground was officially opened by the Dowager Countess of Plymouth in 1924.

...Penarth CC is believed to have been formed in 1851 with their earliest games taking place on Llandough Moors. This was not an ideal location as at high tide, the Severn Estuary spilled over onto the turf. Indeed, the Cardiff Times for July 29th 1864 reported on a game between Penarth and Roath when, in the words of the reporter “the parties were obliged to part earlier than they intended as the tide, which was very high, took possession of their ground.”
In order for spectators to attend games, vessels ran across the mouth of the Ely river across to the Llandough Moors. Indeed, In May 1861 a match took place between the Penarth Dock side and the Cambrian club, with an advert in the Cardiff Times stating that “a steamer will run to-and-fro during the day,” (CT May 17th, 1861) allowing people to attend the matches on the Moors...

The cricket club members built a pavilion at a cost of £300 and the maintenance was the responsibility of a groundsman and coach. Unfortunately the pavilion was damaged by fire in 1926 and rebuilt in 1926/1927.
After the Second World War the maintenance and ownership of the ground became the responsibility of the Penarth Urban District Council.
In the 1950’s the pavilion was extended and two new changing rooms were added, fitted with showers.
The Athletic Club was opened in 1959 and a licensed bar was available. It was hoped this would provide additional monies for all the sections.
In 1964 the Single Wicket Tournament was founded. An event which has been enjoyed ever since and occurs at the end of each season.
Unfortunately, the cricket pavilion was burnt down by vandals in 1996. A new pavilion was built, assisted by the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Sportslot and was opened in 2001.
In 1966 the cricket sphere of operation changed from friendly to league cricket and the Welsh Clubs Cricket Conference was formed in 1968.
Penarth Cricket Club endeavour to introduce youngsters into the game. Currently there are U11, U13 and U15 teams playing league cricket.
Clubs and attitudes change, but uppermost in all cricketers’ minds must be the need to improve cricketing standards whilst maintaining sportsmanship at all times.
